JVC GY-HD201E(B): REVIEW , SPECIFICATIONS , CAMERA AND RECORDER CHOICE.

Block2.jpg

"Why chose the GY-HD 201E and not one of the new 2/3 CMOS chipped/ rolling shutter cameras?"

Simply because the general opinion among broadcast cameramen is that it's a useful flexible camera.
It's remarkably adaptable and unusually solid. With an ever growing choice of recording formats, this camera shoots 1080/50i by firewire direct to the client's choice of recording format including: Macbook pro or any number of firewire equipped formats. A real in these days of format choice. It also shoots 720p true 24 to 60p simultaneously to tape. It has a wide choice of excellent optics and a good viewfinder system. It's beautifully built and robust. In short it's a great piece of kit."

"OK, but why not other HDV cameras?"

"It seems clear that other HD cameras have various lens problems or limitations; poor or very poor viewfinders are all too common, and some are stuck with limited recording formats that you, the client, may well not want, some apparently good HDV cameras are wrecked by non professional "auto" features

"Why not a CMOS/ rolling shutter?"

"Crucially, CMOS chipped cameras  are currently fitted with 'rolling shutters' and for much work are seriously compromised. There is much to be said for CMOS chips, but the rolling shutter is another matter; there are unwanted and some unusable trade-offs. You are limited as to what and how you can successfully shoot; which is unacceptable.  With CCD cameras "smear"can be avoided, the current CMOS chip/ rolling shutter combinations are better in low light but are potentially disastrous when it comes to frame stability (shot wobble) skew and partial frame exposure, shots from moving platforms, helicopters, boats for instance are very likely to fail irrevicobally. Others have covered this problem in detail:

In essence it boils down to: "A non uniform shutter, called a "rolling shutter", exposes different lines of an array at different times. It reduces the number of in-pixel transistors, improving fill factor. This is sometimes acceptable for consumer imaging, but in higher-performance applications, object motion manifests as a distorted image."

When this distortion appears, (in just too many shooting conditions) it can ruin the shoot. And the image distortion is not fixable in post production. After a deal of research it seemed wise to avoid CMOS/ rolling shutter.
CONSIQUENTLY THE JVC GY-HD 201E(B) WAS THE CAMERA OF CHOICE.
